Security
We take information security seriously. Some of the information used in the website in sensitive and we use encryption for data at rest and in motion along with a number of other measures to protect it. We are strong believers in 'eating our own dog food' and information for our own personal insurance situations is stored and accessed in the same place as yours. Our website, database and other underlying IT systems are hosted in the Amazon AWS cloud and in the Microsoft Azure cloud. Both vendors offer world class infrastructure and security in which we have confidence. You can find more details on Amazon here and on Microsoft here. Information in an auto policy declaration page usually contains a 17 digit vehicle identification number (VIN) for each vehicle on the policy that uniquely identifies it, a garaging address for each vehicle and a mailing address for policy correspondence. Drivers in the household are also listed on the policy. Most insurers do not show the date of birth of each driver or their driver's license number and if they do show these two items, they usually mask a portion of the information. Most policies show your name and address, along with the name of your insurance agent (if any) and the expiration dates of your policy.
Here are some things that you can do to improve security:
1. Make sure that your computer/tablet/phone has the latest software patches and for the former, runs up to date firewall and anti-virus software.
2. Don't connect to the internet with dubious WiFi connections.
3. Try and avoid clicking on links in emails. We'll send you one out of necessity when you first register with the site to make sure that the email entered when registering really belongs to you. Aside from that, we try and avoid including links in our emails, even if it makes them a little less convenient to use.
4. Make sure that you always connect using SSL encryption with an https: rather than an http: connection. Most browsers display a padlock symbol when using SSL - this makes it easier to see that you really do have a valid connection to Bnie Inc.
5. Change your password regularly, don't use the same password in multiple places and use passwords that are long, contain at least one capital letter, at least one number and at least one symbol.
6. For children in the household, we would suggest entering a name that you recognize but is not close to their actual name e.g. Junior or Loveable1 and a date of birth close to but not exactly right so that their age is directionally correct.
7. For household income, net worth and total assets, again we suggest something directionally correct rather than completely accurate - we can get a good idea of your insurance situation without needing exact figures.
8. Do provide accurate information for the expiration dates of any policies not entered by uploading a PDF. Tightly managing these dates is a key element to improving the appropriateness of the coverages you buy and what you pay for them.
