Personal injury protection
Personal injury protection (PIP) is required in some states and not others. PIP coverage protects the occupents of a vehicle against medical costs as a result of injuries, and various other items e.g. wage loss resulting from the accident. It applies without regard to who was at fault in the accident, and is therefore sometimes referred to as 'no fault' coverage. It can also provide benefits to a household member injured as a pedestrian. In most states, there is a maximum amount of coverage provided under the policy.
